The guide decides when crampons are worn and teaches safe movement. A secure fit depends on boot shape, sole stiffness and the crampon binding, so the same crampon will not suit every boot equally well.

How to match, fit and inspect rental crampons
The rental catalog uses one crampon line because the actual pair must be selected for the boots that will be worn. There is no universal crampon that can be approved for every mountain boot from a model name, size label or photograph.
Bring both actual boots
Compatibility depends on the construction and condition of the real pair: sole shape and stiffness, toe and heel geometry, available welts and overall dimensions. Bring both boots even when they are nominally the same size. Street-shoe size does not answer these questions.
Confirm the binding system
Staff select a binding arrangement that works with the issued boots and the route requirements supplied by the leader. Do not choose a step-in, semi-automatic or strap configuration merely by appearance. The attachment must be assessed as a complete boot-and-crampon system.
Fit each crampon separately
Place the correct crampon on each boot and check frame length, toe seating, heel seating, retention and strap routing. The boot should sit squarely without unwanted movement. Left and right components, if designated, must remain correctly assigned.
Inspect points, frame and anti-balling plates
Check the points for significant damage or deformation, the frame and adjustment bar for cracks or bends, and the anti-balling plates for secure attachment and useful condition. Inspect straps, buckles, bails and heel levers as applicable to the issued model.
Practice fitting in gloves
Remove and refit both crampons while wearing the gloves or mitts intended for the route. Tighten and secure loose strap ends as instructed. The user should recognize incomplete seating or an unlocked component before leaving the shop.
Walk only in the controlled fitting area
Follow the staff procedure for a short compatibility check. Confirm that the crampons remain seated when the boot is moved and that straps do not loosen. A shop check does not replace route-specific instruction or movement practice.
