How to choose and inspect a rental down vest
A down vest adds insulation around the torso while leaving the arms free. It can fill a useful gap between fleece and a full insulated jacket, but it is an optional layer and does not replace the warm jacket required for cold, exposed or stationary periods.
Identify the gap in the clothing system
List the base layer, fleece, shell and full insulated jacket already planned. Add a vest only when it serves a clear purpose for the activity and forecast. More layers are not automatically better if they compress insulation, restrict breathing or cause overheating.
Try it over the intended mid-layers
Wear the base and fleece layers you expect to use, fasten the vest and move both arms through their full range. Check the collar, armholes, hem and back length. The vest should not pull under backpack straps or leave a large opening around the shoulders.
Test it under the outer layer
If the vest will be worn under a shell, put the shell on as well. Confirm that the down is not compressed and that zips, harness and backpack remain usable. If it will be worn outside a fleece, make sure the hem does not interfere with a harness or waist belt.
Inspect the down and fabric
Check the main zip, collar, pockets, lining, outer fabric, seams and baffles. Look for tears, escaping down, damp areas, clumps or badly displaced fill. Record repairs and existing damage before collection.
Keep down dry and uncompressed
