Keep down dry
Pack the jacket inside a dry bag or protected compartment rather than relying on the backpack fabric alone. Keep it away from leaking fuel, open flame, overheated surfaces, crampon points and ski edges. Do not use the jacket as a seat or dry it with uncontrolled high heat.
