Rent a Red Fox fleece jacket for Mount Elbrus

A Red Fox full-zip fleece jacket is a versatile active mid-layer for trekking, acclimatization, camp and suitable cold-weather movement around Elbrus. The full zip makes it easier to ventilate or remove the layer, but fleece still needs a shell in wind or precipitation and a more substantial insulating jacket for cold stops when the equipment plan requires one.

Build the clothing system before choosing the size

Confirm what will be worn beneath and above the fleece: the actual base layer, weatherproof shell and warm jacket. Fit the Red Fox jacket over the base layer first. It should allow a thin insulating air layer without hanging in large folds. There must be no pulling across the chest, shoulders, armpits or elbows.

Put the shell on over it and close both jackets. If the shell becomes tight or the fleece bunches at the shoulders, choose a different size or combination. If a down jacket is intended to go over the system, test that as well. Insulation compressed by an undersized outer layer cannot perform as designed.

Check length and movement

Raise both arms overhead, reach forward, rotate the torso and bend at the waist. The hem should remain below the waistband and the cuffs should continue to cover the wrists without restricting the hands. The collar must protect the neck without pressing on the throat, chin or jaw when the head turns.

For a climbing or glacier plan, repeat the movements in the intended harness. The fleece must not form thick folds beneath the waist belt. Main and pocket zips should remain accessible and must not sit directly under a loaded buckle.

Use the full zip before overheating begins

Fleece manages moisture best when the wearer also manages pace and ventilation. Open the main zip early on a warm ascent rather than waiting until the base layer is wet. Test the puller in the gloves you expect to wear and confirm that the slider moves smoothly without catching the inner flap. Before entering stronger wind or stopping for long, close the appropriate layers before rapid cooling begins.

Test the jacket with a loaded backpack

Wear the backpack at a realistic weight and tighten the hip belt, shoulder straps and sternum strap. Walk, reach and turn. Check the shoulders, collar, side seams and lower back for pressure. A pocket hidden by the hip belt may be inconvenient but acceptable; a zip pull or thick seam trapped under load can become painful over several hours.

Inspect zips, fabric and high-wear areas

Inspect the actual rental jacket because age and previous use matter more than the photograph. Run the main zip and every pocket zip through their full travel. Check the pullers, stops and stitching. Inspect the collar, shoulders, cuffs, hem, elbows, side panels and areas beneath pack straps. Record holes, open seams, heavy pilling, stretched fabric, contamination, melted fibers and previous repairs.

Plan moisture control and drying

A full zip helps ventilation, but fleece is not waterproof and a saturated jacket is not a dry spare. Wear the shell required for rain, wet snow or strong wind. For a multi-day trip, allow time for airing and drying and keep the separate dry insulation specified by the equipment list. Do not dry the rental jacket directly on a heater, stove or open flame.
