Measure both feet in millimeters
Place paper against a wall on a hard floor. Stand in one thin riding sock with the heel lightly touching the wall and weight distributed normally. Mark the longest toe and measure from the wall edge. Repeat for the other foot. Measure while standing rather than tracing an unweighted seated foot.
Use one proper sock
Two thick socks take up space, can crease and may restrict circulation. They do not correct an oversized or badly shaped boot. Keep pant cuffs outside the boot and make sure the liner and tongue are seated smoothly before tightening. Bring a required personal footbed to the fitting.
Secure each closure zone progressively
Seat the heel and close any inner harness before tightening laces, a dial, straps or other outer controls. Identify which control tightens which zone instead of forcing the whole system as tight as possible. Stand with knees flexed in a riding stance. The heel should remain controlled, the toes should not be painfully compressed and the foot should not become numb.
Check forward flex and heel hold
With both boots fastened, flex forward repeatedly while keeping the soles flat. A small amount of liner movement is different from the heel lifting freely inside the boot.
