A ski helmet, goggles, warm gloves and knee or elbow pads perform different jobs. They are not one universal protection package, and wearing them does not replace instruction, speed control or choosing terrain appropriate to your ability.

Checking helmet fit

The helmet should sit level, cover the forehead and remain stable when you turn or gently shake your head. An oversized shell moves with the goggles. An undersized or unsuitable shape creates pressure points that can become painful during the day. Fasten the chin strap securely without pressing against the throat.

Inspect the shell, liner, adjustment system and buckle before collection. The printed size is only a starting point because head shapes differ. A balaclava and hood affect fit, so try the helmet with the same thin layer you intend to wear while riding.

Matching a helmet and goggles

Try them together. The upper edge of the goggles should meet the helmet without a large exposed gap, yet the frame should not be driven into the bridge of the nose. The strap must remain secure on the helmet and the helmet must not push the goggles down.

Turn your head, look up and down, and close the jacket collar fully. Confirm that the frame does not excessively restrict peripheral vision and that the helmet, goggles and collar do not force one another out of position.

Lens choice, visibility and fogging

Light on Mount Elbrus can change quickly between strong sun, cloud, flat light, snowfall and wind. No single lens guarantees equally clear vision in every condition. Consider the current forecast, time of day and actual visibility before departure.

Do not rub the inside of a wet lens with snow, tissue or a glove because this can damage the anti-fog coating. Shake off loose snow, maintain ventilation and allow the goggles to dry away from flames or intense heat. Keep helmet, hood and hat fabric clear of the vents.

Gloves for skiing and snowboarding

Ski gloves should provide warmth while allowing you to fasten boots, adjust goggles and hold poles. Check finger length, the ability to close the hand, cuff fit and compatibility with the jacket sleeve. A wet or excessively tight glove can allow the hand to cool more quickly.

Thin fleece gloves are not a substitute for full ski gloves. On this website they are sold rather than rented. Plan a suitable insulated pair for cold or windy conditions.

Knee and elbow pads

Pads should cover the intended area, remain in place and avoid restricting circulation. Test them with the clothing you will wear: the same model can fit differently beneath loose trousers or over a thicker layer.

Perform several squats, bends and arm movements. The pads should not restrict your riding stance or pull clothing into a painful fold. They may reduce the effect of some impacts, but they cannot make a fall safe or replace instruction.

Collection checklist

1. Try the helmet and adjust it to the head.
2. Wear the helmet, goggles and jacket together.
3. Check the field of view, strap security and pressure points.
4. Try the gloves and perform ordinary hand movements.
5. Adjust knee and elbow pads over the intended clothing.
6. Request a different item before collection if the fit is unsuitable.

You can state a preference, but fit and the available model are confirmed during fitting. Compatibility with the helmet matters more than a photograph or model name.

Are protective pads mandatory?

Requirements depend on the activity, age, lesson and the participant’s or instructor’s decision. Rental staff help with fit but do not decide whether riding is suitable.

Common mistakes

• selecting a helmet by age alone without measuring the head;
• trying the helmet and goggles separately;
• wearing a thick hat that changes helmet fit;
• rubbing the wet inner lens surface;
• treating protective equipment as a substitute for instruction and speed control;
• collecting the set without testing buckles and adjustments.

Care and return

After riding, allow the helmet, goggles, gloves and pads to dry naturally. Do not place them on a heater or near an open flame, and do not apply household chemicals to the lens. At return, report a fall involving a helmet impact, lens damage, faulty buckle or torn fabric even when the product still appears usable.
