How to fit and pack a 90 L expedition backpack for Mount Elbrus
A 90 L backpack is intended for genuinely bulky expedition or camp loads. It is not a normal summit-day choice and should be reserved only when the itinerary, transport plan and personal carrying responsibilities justify the volume. Confirm who carries tents, sleeping equipment, food and group hardware before booking.
Check whether 90 liters is actually required
Compare the planned load with alternatives such as a transport duffel plus a smaller walking pack. A large backpack is useful only when the person must carry the contents over distance. Extra empty volume can encourage unnecessary weight and make packing less stable.
Measure the torso and fit the hip belt
For an adjustable harness, measure from the prominent vertebra at the base of the neck to the line of the iliac crests and set the back length. Center the padded hip belt around the top of the pelvis so it can transfer weight. Shoulder straps should follow the shoulders without a large gap or excessive downward pressure.
Test with the planned carried load
Use the real equipment or a verified equivalent weight, not an arbitrary light fitting load. Tighten the hip belt first, then shoulder straps, load-control straps and sternum strap. Walk, turn, step up and down and check balance. Stop if the load pulls backwards, sways or creates numbness.
Build a stable load
Place dense items close to the back and distribute weight evenly from side to side. Fill voids so hard equipment cannot move, protect insulation from sharp objects and keep frequently needed layers accessible. Avoid a top-heavy shape and long loose items that catch on terrain or transport.
Use external attachments carefully
Ask staff to demonstrate the intended attachment points for a mat, tent components, poles or an ice axe where the packing list requires them. Secure sharp points and every loose strap. Do not attach so much outside that the pack becomes wider, unstable or difficult to set down safely.
Waterproof the contents in layers
Use internal protection for the sleeping system, down clothing, electronics and documents. A rain cover can help but does not seal the harness openings or resist every gust. Pack fuel, wet items and anything that can contaminate food or insulation separately.
