Rent a personal ice screw for Mount Elbrus

A personal ice screw is route-specific life-safety hardware, not a universal item for every Mount Elbrus climb. It is issued only when the current route, glacier conditions and a qualified leader’s rope or crevasse-rescue system require it. Its presence never compensates for missing training, partners, rope-system components or sound judgment.

Confirm why the screw is required

Use the current route briefing and the leader’s equipment list rather than an old packing list. A personal screw may be specified where the party will travel through crevassed terrain or use a defined protection or rescue system; it is not a routine substitute for an ice axe and it is separate from group hardware carried under the guide’s plan. If the role of the screw cannot be explained before collection, stop and ask.

Identify the exact issued model

Read the manufacturer, model, length and markings on the actual item. Confirm whether the tube is steel or aluminum, which connector is required and whether a crank, protective cap or carrier is part of the issue. Color and handle shape do not establish material, standard, strength or compatibility. The manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model take priority over generic advice.

Inspect the teeth and tube

Under good light, look at every tooth and the full tube. Reject bent, chipped or heavily blunted teeth, cracks, deep scoring, corrosion, a crushed or blocked tube and any deformation that prevents normal handling. Do not test sharpness with a finger. The teeth of a rental screw must not be filed, sharpened or reshaped by the customer: an incorrect profile can damage the screw and conceal its condition from the next user.

Inspect the hanger, crank and threads

Check the hanger and its connection to the tube for cracks, distortion, excessive play or sharp damage. Operate the crank or handle through its normal movement without forcing it. Examine the threads and the start of the tube for impact damage, contamination and abnormal resistance. A screw that was forced, cross-loaded, dropped onto rock or exposed to chemicals must be reported even when no defect is obvious.

Confirm connector and carrying arrangement

The leader should specify the compatible carabiner and the position of the screw within the personal system. Confirm that the connector closes and locks normally and that the hanger does not create an awkward or side-loaded arrangement. During transport, cover the teeth and secure the screw so it cannot cut clothing, puncture luggage, damage a rope or injure another person. Do not carry it loose inside a bag.

Keep technique under competent supervision

Placement, attachment, removal and use in a crevasse-rescue system require practical instruction on the actual equipment and conditions. Ice quality, temperature, loading direction and the surrounding rope system all matter.
