Rent a CAMP carabiner for Mount Elbrus

A CAMP carabiner is one connector inside a complete life-safety system. A request for “one carabiner” is not a usable specification: shape, connector class, gate and locking method, strength markings, material, quantity and intended position must all match the task. A competent person should define the system before Rock’N’Rent issues the connector.

Specify the exact connector requirement

Confirm where each carabiner will be used and what it connects: a harness attachment, belay or descending device, sling, pulley, anchor component or another part of the system. The responsible guide or instructor should state the required shape, locking method, quantity and standard. A carabiner that fits physically is not automatically appropriate.

Read every marking on the issued connector

Identify CAMP as the manufacturer, the model or reference where marked, applicable standard, strength values and production or traceability information. Strength values normally distinguish different loading directions and the gate-open condition; they are not interchangeable. Do not infer performance from color, size, weight or a catalog photograph. If essential markings are unreadable, isolate the connector until it can be identified.

Inspect the entire body

Examine the spine, basket, nose, hinge area and all surfaces that contact rope, webbing or metal. Look for cracks, deformation, deep grooves, sharp burrs, corrosion, severe abrasion, heat damage and chemical contamination. Pay particular attention to notches that could damage rope or prevent the gate from seating normally.

Check the gate and locking mechanism slowly

Open the gate through its normal range and release it slowly so spring action does not hide a closing fault. The gate must align with the nose and close completely. Operate the screw sleeve or automatic lock through its full cycle. A manual sleeve must screw and unscrew normally; an automatic mechanism must complete every locking movement without help. Mud, sand, paint, ice and dirty water can prevent reliable closure.

Verify orientation in the complete system

Assemble the connector with the exact device, sling, harness point or rope under competent supervision. Confirm that the intended load remains on the major axis, the gate is not pressed by another component and the system does not create cross-loading, three-way loading or leverage over an edge. Check that movement cannot rotate the carabiner into a weaker position.

Check compatibility with gloves and the operating sequence

The intended user should be able to open, close, lock and visually verify the connector in the gloves required for the route. This does not replace instruction in the rope system. Repeated opening may be inappropriate for some manual connectors, while other arrangements require a connector that can be checked frequently; follow the exact device instructions and system design.

Protect traceability and condition

Do not engrave with a punch, file the body, apply paint, tape over markings or improvise a retaining device. Do not lubricate the lock unless the manufacturer’s instructions and owner approve the exact method. Protect the connector from chemicals, fuel, salt, grit and high heat. Report a significant drop, abnormal load or contamination.
