Rent a CAMP ascender for Mount Elbrus

A CAMP hand ascender is specialist life-safety equipment for a defined rope system. It is not a routine item to add because a route is described as technical. Before rental, a competent person must specify the exact purpose, device model, left- or right-hand orientation, permitted rope, connectors, attachment arrangement and independent safety system.

Define the system and competent user

First establish whether the device is intended for a fixed-rope ascent, supervised training, positioning, a hauling arrangement or another task. These uses are not interchangeable. The responsible guide or instructor must identify who will operate the ascender and how it fits into the complete system. This page is a collection and inspection guide, not instruction in ascending or rescue technique.

Read the exact model and markings

CAMP produces several ascenders with different standards, rope ranges, hand versions and permitted configurations. Read the name, reference, standards, orientation and rope markings on the issued device and compare them with its current manufacturer instructions. Do not transfer a rope diameter or use case from another CAMP product, even when the devices look similar.

Markings must remain legible enough to identify the equipment. If the model, reference or compatibility cannot be established, the device should not be issued until Rock’N’Rent staff resolve it.

Check the compatible rope as well as the ascender

Compatibility is not determined by diameter alone. The responsible person must confirm rope type, construction, condition and any limitations stated in the device manual. A wet, icy, muddy, glazed, damaged or heavily worn rope can change how the cam engages. Never use the teeth to compensate for an unsuitable or uncertain rope.

Inspect the body and attachment points

Examine the complete body, handle, attachment openings and areas that contact connectors or rope. Look for cracks, deformation, sharp edges, deep wear, corrosion, heat damage, chemical contamination and unauthorized modification. Attachment holes must not be distorted or cut by severe wear, and the handle must remain securely connected to the body.

Inspect the cam and closing mechanism without dismantling

Open and release the safety catch as designed. Check the cam, teeth, axle area, spring action and stops. The cam should move freely and return normally without grinding, sticking or excessive sideways play. Teeth must not be filed, sharpened or reshaped. Do not lubricate the cam, open the body or attempt a workshop repair at the rental desk.

Check connectors, orientation and backup

The guide or competent instructor should verify every connector, attachment point, orientation, tether and independent safety component in the intended system. A connector that physically fits through a hole is not automatically appropriate. Loose straps, clothing, gloves and other equipment must not interfere with the cam or safety catch.

Perform a supervised functional check

Use the exact compatible rope and complete system in a controlled environment. Under competent supervision, confirm that the ascender slides along the rope in the intended direction of travel and locks onto it when loaded in the opposite direction. A hand squeeze, photograph or test on a different rope does not prove correct operation. The user must be able to operate and visually check the device with the gloves intended for the route.

Protect the mechanism during transport and use

Keep the ascender away from mud, ice, grit, fuel, oil, battery leakage, salt and cleaning chemicals. Pack it so the teeth do not damage rope, slings, clothing or waterproof bags. After a significant drop, abnormal loading, contamination or unexpected behavior, isolate the device and report the event rather than returning it silently to the rental kit.

Remove doubtful equipment from use

If identification, compatibility, condition or operation is uncertain, do not issue or use the ascender. Stop, separate it from service and contact the responsible guide and Rock’N’Rent. Incorrect selection or attachment can damage the rope or lead to a fall.
