Rent a GPS for Mount Elbrus: check maps, GPX data, coordinates, batteries and an independent backup. A screen track does not make an unfamiliar route safe.

A rental GPS can record your path, display coordinates and work with waypoints that have been checked in advance. A line on the screen does not make an unfamiliar Mount Elbrus route safe. The receiver cannot assess weather, crevasses, snow conditions, a participant’s health or whether someone else’s track is current.

What a GPS can and cannot do
A receiver calculates position from satellite signals, displays saved waypoints, records the path traveled and can follow a track loaded in advance. A track is a sequence of points containing coordinates, time and elevation—not a verified route in itself. Bad source data remains bad data on a perfectly functioning device.
A GPS does not replace the ability to read terrain, compare the display with the landscape, recognize a deviation from the plan or make decisions when visibility deteriorates. If a participant first handles the model immediately before a night departure, renting the device has not supplied the missing skill.
Define the task before reserving the receiver
State the dates, program or route, the person responsible for navigation and the data that must be checked at pickup. Do not ask rental staff to “load the route” without naming where the file came from. The shop checks the receiver and everything issued with it; it does not certify that a route file is safe or current.

- Who supplies the GPX file, and when did the group leader approve it?
- Which position format is used for the coordinates?
- Which device or navigation method is the independent backup?
- Who in the group can use both the primary and backup systems?
Understand tracks, routes and waypoints
A track is a sequence of recorded positions. A route may be calculated by the receiver between selected points and can depend on the installed map and settings. A waypoint is a saved location, such as the start of a section or a meeting point. These objects are not interchangeable.
Open every required file before departure. Check its name, direction, date, source and location on the map. Make sure the line does not begin elsewhere, stop unexpectedly or belong to a similar but different variation. The official Garmin manual explains that waypoints can be transferred to the receiver in a GPX file.
Agree on the coordinate format
The same location can be written in decimal degrees, degrees and decimal minutes, or degrees, minutes and seconds. If one person dictates coordinates in one format while the receiver expects another, the position can be entered incorrectly even when every digit is repeated accurately.
Check the format on every device used by the group. Garmin states that you should not change the position format or map datum unless you are using a map or chart that specifies a different one. The receiver uses WGS 84 by default, but the setting must match your source data rather than whatever you are used to. Garmin documents these settings in its position-format guide.
Run an outdoor test
Go outside, wait for a stable position and compare the displayed coordinates with an independent source. Record a short test track, stop recording, save it and reopen the file. Create a test waypoint and find it again in the list.
Practice zooming, changing screens, using the backlight, locking buttons and returning to the map. Repeat the essential actions in the gloves you will use. Indoor setup does not confirm reliable satellite reception or show whether the controls are manageable in the cold.
Inspect the receiver and everything issued with it
Check the display, buttons, battery cover, seal, port, attachment point and safety lanyard. Record existing damage in the handover document. Confirm whether batteries, cable, memory card and attachment are included: the word “GPS” does not describe the complete set.
Secure the receiver so that it cannot fall out when a pocket is opened, yet remains accessible without unloading the backpack. Do not leave it swinging outside from a single weak clip or cord.
Prepare the power system for cold
Low temperatures reduce available battery capacity. Install a fresh set of the correct type, check the level and carry spares. Keep spare cells dry and closer to the body, with their terminals protected against short circuits.
Practice changing batteries without losing the cover or small parts. After replacement, recheck settings, map, track and current position. A phone and power bank are also vulnerable to cold, so a second screen alone is not an independent backup.
Build a genuinely independent backup
A backup should not fail for the same reason as the primary receiver. Depending on the program, it may include a second GPS, a phone with an offline map downloaded in advance, a paper map and compass, radio communication, agreed waypoints and—most importantly—someone who can use the system.
Two devices carrying the same unverified track are not an independent backup. Nor does a spare battery help if it is stored beside the primary set in the cold or the user cannot restore the required screen after restarting the receiver.
Common GPS-rental mistakes
- seeing a line on the screen without checking its source, date and direction;
- confusing position format or map datum;
- failing to open the GPX file after loading it;
- searching for the required screen for the first time at night on the route;
- leaving batteries and the power bank exposed to cold;
- carrying the receiver without a safety lanyard;
- treating a phone containing the same file as a fully independent backup;
- failing to name the person responsible for navigation.
Seven-step pickup protocol
- Confirm the model, issued components and condition.
- Install fresh batteries and check the units.
- Open the map, required track and key waypoints.
- Match the coordinate format across everyone who may communicate a position.
- Record a short outdoor test track and save a waypoint.
- Repeat the essential actions in gloves.
- Check the attachment, spare power and independent backup.
