Alpine, trekking and touring poles are different

Alpine ski poles are intended mainly for lift-served resort skiing. They normally have a fixed shaft length, grip, strap, tip and basket. Trekking poles are generally adjustable and designed for walking. Ski-touring requirements depend on ascent technique, terrain, bindings and individual preference.

Check length in ski boots

Test the starting length in ski boots and a natural stance. Your shoulder should not lift to reach the grip and your torso should not have to drop toward it. A common starting check places the forearm near horizontal, but this is a guide rather than a universal rule.

Ability, technique, terrain and instructor preference can change the final selection. A beginner usually benefits more from a neutral, relaxed position than from matching a formula exactly. Compare both poles and verify that the actual lengths match.

Test the grip with gloves

• The grip should sit naturally in the hand without excessive finger tension.
• The strap must be intact and adjustable. Ask an instructor when and how to use it.

Do not automatically cinch the strap tight around your wrist in every situation. What is taught depends on the activity and your instructor. Work out in advance how to get your hand out of the strap quickly and how to hold the poles when you load and unload a lift.
