How to choose and inspect rental ski poles
Rental ski poles for Mount Elbrus should match the skier, ski boots and intended resort use. They are not interchangeable with trekking or ski-touring poles: the grip, basket, tip and fixed length are designed around piste skiing rather than walking approaches, adjustable uphill travel or mountaineering.
What to tell the rental before collection

Check both poles as a matched pair
Confirm that both shafts have the same marked length and form a matched pair. Sight along each shaft from more than one direction to spot a bend. Compare the grips, straps, baskets and tips, and record existing scratches, dents or repairs before leaving Rock’N’Rent. A visibly bent shaft, cracked component or loose grip requires another pair.
Test the grips with real gloves
Hold the poles while wearing the ski gloves you intend to use. The grip should remain secure without excessive squeezing, and the hand must be able to release it. Check that the strap is intact and can be adjusted without forcing the buckle. Ask an instructor whether and how to use straps for the intended lesson or terrain; a copied technique can trap the hand during a fall.
Check baskets and tips
Both baskets should be secure, similar in size and appropriate for ordinary resort use. Tips must not be loose, severely worn or dangerously damaged. Small piste baskets can sink deeply in soft snow, while a larger basket still does not turn a resort pole into a touring or mountaineering tool.

Handle poles safely on lifts and in lift lines
Carry the pair together with tips pointing down and away from other people. Do not swing them in lift lines, strike snow or ice from boots and bindings, use them as a lever, or place the shafts where a lift door can trap them. Follow lift and instructor directions for loading and unloading.
Inspect again after a fall
If a pole was trapped under the body, ski or lift, stop and compare both shafts before continuing. A bend, crack, detached basket, loose grip or damaged strap can worsen during use. Ski poles are not an ice axe and must not be relied on for self-arrest on steep or icy terrain.
