How to Choose a Backpack for Mount Elbrus

Choose a 15 L, 20–35 L, 45 L or 90 L backpack for Mount Elbrus by route logistics, actual load, torso fit and the equipment you carry yourself.

There is no single correct backpack volume for every Mount Elbrus program. A summit day from established accommodation, a multi-day north-side itinerary and an expedition approach with camping equipment place very different demands on a pack. Choose the volume only after separating personal equipment, shared group equipment and items transported by the operator or guide.

Choose by carried load, not by the route name alone

Send the rental team the exact program, number of days, accommodation plan and the equipment list supplied by the guide. Confirm whether you personally carry a sleeping bag, mat, tent section, stove, fuel, rope or food. Two travelers on the same mountain can legitimately require different packs because their logistics differ.

As a practical starting point, Rock’N’Rent offers 15 L, 20–35 L, 45 L and 90 L options. These are categories, not automatic prescriptions.

What the volume ranges usually mean

  • 15–20 L: a compact day pack for a deliberately short list where bulky insulation and group equipment are carried elsewhere.
  • 20–35 L: a versatile day-pack range for spare layers, water, food, goggles, gloves and route-specific personal equipment.
  • Around 45 L: useful when the day load is bulky or when part of the overnight or group equipment must be carried personally.
  • Around 90 L: an expedition load-hauling category for remote approaches and programs where substantial personal and shared equipment is carried. It is not a summit-day default.

Do a trial pack before deciding. A nominal 35 L pack can be too small for poorly compressed clothing, while an oversized pack invites unnecessary weight and can be harder to stabilize.

Measure torso length

Backpack size is not the same as clothing size. Measure from the C7 vertebra—the prominent bone at the base of the neck when the head tilts forward—to the level of the iliac crests at the top of the hip bones. Osprey’s current fitting guide uses this torso measurement as the basis for pack sizing.

Send height and torso length before collection, but still fit the pack with weight inside it. Body proportions vary too much for height alone to determine the correct back length.

Fit the hipbelt first

Loosen all straps, add a realistic test load and place the hipbelt over the hip bones. Tighten it evenly before the shoulder straps. The belt should transfer part of the load without sitting on the waist or sliding down. If the padding barely reaches the hips, overlaps excessively or the buckle reaches the end of its adjustment, try another size or model.

Tighten the shoulder straps until they wrap the shoulders without a large gap. Then adjust the load lifters to bring the upper pack closer to the body and fasten the sternum strap without restricting breathing.

Walk, bend and reach

A static mirror check is not enough. Walk with the test load, step up, bend forward and reach for the equipment you expect to use. The pack should not sway, pull sharply on the shoulders or push the helmet or head forward. Check that the hipbelt remains stable over clothing layers.

Check attachment points without hanging loose gear

Confirm how trekking poles, an ice axe, helmet or sleeping mat will be carried. Sharp equipment needs secure attachment and protection. Do not assume every object should be strapped outside: loose equipment catches wind, can be lost and changes balance.

Pack frequently needed items where they remain accessible. Emergency insulation, goggles, gloves, navigation and group-specified safety equipment should not be buried beneath overnight gear.

Remote programs need a logistics check

For north, east, west and traverse itineraries, do not infer the pack size from a generic Elbrus list. Confirm the actual carriage plan. The 80–100 L category may be appropriate for some remote approaches when the participant carries substantial camping and group equipment; other programs arrange part of that load differently.

Common backpack questions

Is a 30 L pack enough for the south route?

It may be, but the route name alone cannot answer the question. Check the actual day list, insulation volume, water, food and personal technical equipment, then make a trial pack.

Is a larger pack always more comfortable?

No. Comfort depends on torso length, hipbelt fit, suspension and how the load is packed. Excess volume can allow the load to move and encourages unnecessary items.

Should height determine pack size?

Height is useful background information, but torso length and hipbelt fit are more direct measurements. Two people of equal height can need different back lengths.

Backpack collection checklist

  • Exact program, nights and carriage plan confirmed.
  • Personal and shared equipment separated.
  • All intended gear fits without forcing the zipper or lid.
  • Torso length and hipbelt fit checked with a realistic load.
  • Shoulder straps, load lifters and sternum strap adjusted.
  • No painful pressure, large shoulder gap or uncontrolled sway during a short walk.
  • Buckles, zippers, compression straps and attachment points inspected.
  • Critical items remain accessible and sharp equipment is secured.
