What an expedition down jacket is for

You generate a lot of heat while you are moving and lose it fast the moment you stop. A substantial down jacket can be added during an early start, a long stop, a slow section or an unexpected delay. It provides fast insulation without requiring you to remove the rest of your clothing.

That does not mean it should be worn continuously. Down must be protected from moisture, and overheating during hard movement can wet the layers underneath. Good clothing management means adding, venting or removing insulation before you become soaked or deeply chilled.

Start with the complete layering system

A practical system normally includes a next-to-skin layer, active insulation such as fleece, wind and precipitation protection, and a warmer layer for colder or less active stages. • Test sleeve length and cuffs with both working gloves and warmer mittens.
• Make sure the layers underneath are not squeezed flat: compressed insulation loses much of its warmth.

A jacket that is too tight restricts movement and crushes insulation. One that is excessively large can be difficult to seal and may interfere with equipment. You want functional room for your layers, not simply the largest size on the rack.

Inspect it before collection

Check the outer fabric, seams, zippers, pockets, hood, adjusters and the distribution of the down. Record existing repairs or damage with the rental staff. Common down-jacket selection mistakes

The first is fitting the jacket over a T-shirt and discovering later that it will not close over fleece and shell layers. The third is treating a down jacket as fully waterproof outerwear when its face fabric does not replace a proper shell in sustained precipitation.
