How to inspect, pack and practice with an avalanche shovel
An avalanche shovel is the excavation part of a personal rescue kit used with a transceiver and probe. The responsible leader decides who must carry each item, but a shovel assigned to the group is useful only when it is complete, accessible and familiar to its user.
Assemble it in gloves
Connect the blade and shaft, extend all telescoping sections and confirm that every locking pin or mechanism engages. Fit the handle in the intended orientation and repeat assembly until the sequence is reliable. A part that looks attached but has not locked can separate under load.
Inspect the complete shovel
Check the blade, neck, shaft sections, handle, pins and joints for cracks, deformation, looseness or missing parts. Apply controlled pressure during the shop check without abusing the equipment. The assembled shovel should remain stable and should not collapse or rotate unexpectedly.
Pack blade and handle for rapid access
Use the rescue-equipment compartment or another arrangement that allows the shovel to be removed without emptying the backpack. Do not secure it beneath camping equipment or with knots, tools or multiple straps. Confirm that every group member knows where their own rescue equipment is packed.

A shovel carried without a transmitting transceiver, probe, trained partners and a plan is not a complete avalanche-rescue setup. The equipment neither prevents release nor replaces forecasting, terrain selection, spacing and the decision to avoid the slope.
